Changes to Genie+ at Disney World

Sometimes I feel like I yearn for the days of Fast Pass, attraction planned in advance, with perks for staying on Disney property.  The days when I wasn’t glued to my phone trying to hack the Genie+ system.  Ah- the good old days haha.

Well, we aren’t EXACTLY going back to the fastpass era, but the changes announced today for Walt Disney World, are a huge step in the right direction!  And renting Disney Vacation Club or using credit card points and miles to stay on property, just became a bigger benefit!

Changes to Genie+ Names

First off- it wouldn’t be Disney if they didn’t come up with new names for adjusted programs! Starting July 24th, Genie+ will be known as Lightning Lane Multi-Pass, and Individual Lightning Lanes will be called Lightning Lane Single Pass.

How the Program changes

Starting July 24th you will be able to:

  • Make Lightning Lane plans before you get to the parks, so you can be less on your phone and more present for memories.
  • Choose your experiences and times prior to purchasing, so you know if it is worth purchasing for that day.
  • Book Lightning Lane passes for multiple vacation days, all in a single day. We are hoping this is similar to the Dining reservation system, so that you could start at the end of vacation and work your way forward for more selections.

The Multi-Pass is similar to the old FastPass system, where you can make up to 3 Lightning Lane selections in a park in advance of your visit, making it easier to reserve ride times and work in overall plans like dining easier.  The only big change is that unlike FastPass, Disney has will continue to have a tiered system for attractions. Of those 3 advance selections, you’ll be able to choose one experience from a higher-tiered group and two experiences (or all three) from a lower-tiered group. And to merge the two systems together, after you check in for your first attraction, you can then make another selection for later (and it looks like this can be either tier one or tier two as available).  Disney completely got rid of the 120 minute rule, so no need to look at your watch to see when you can stack those selections!
