Getting Southwest Airline Points Back

You were a great planner and booked your Southwest flight as soon as the calendar opened up.  Good for you!  But then you looked and the price on your flight is less now than when you booked it!  How dare they?!?!  It happens more than you think.  Are you stuck with the higher price?  Nope- and here is how to get the lower point price, it super easy.

Check your flights often

Flights are not a one and done price, they vary.  And they don’t just go up in price the closer they get (flight less than 14 days, and less than 7 days prices usually skyrocket) but they also can go DOWN.  And it isn’t just during a Southwest promotion sale.  It pays to check your Southwest Flight price every once in a while to see if the point price has actually decreased.  We’ve had numerous flights where this has happened.  The great thing about Southwest is that you can modify your flight with no fee.

How to Check

Log into you Southwest Account or open your Southwest app.  Find the flight you want to price check.

After you pick your flight, click “change”.

Our Guide to the Southwest Card

It will then show you all the flight options and also the difference in points price.

the numbers on the right will then show you if the flight has increased (+) or decreased (-) in price (or in this case points).  If the flight you want has decreased in price, select it and your flight will be modified to the new price.  If you have more than one passenger on a reservation, it will automatically book it for all the passengers at the same time.

What happens next?

The points difference between your original flight and the new modified price will automatically be returned to your Southwest Rapid Rewards account. We have found this to be almost immediate.

What if I paid cash?

If you paid cash for your flight, you can get a “refund” for the cash price difference.  But instead of refunding your card, you will receive a travel credit called a luv voucher that can be used for future flights.
