Rent Points using Facebook (part 2)

When we rent points (either for an extra trip or for an extra night on a planned trip) our go to place is Facebook. We have a couple of Facebook groups we suggest to rent points, and get questions you have about your resort or Disney park trip answered directly from DVC members.

Why use the groups to rent? Because you cut out the middle man. You can rent distressed points (points that have to be used quickly) for as little as $15 a point. Translation- a studio would be between $150-200 a night. Most range between $18-22 a point (meaning $180-$400 as a range). You work directly with a DVC member to make the reservations, which can be nice if you have any questions. These are people who know a lot about their home resort!

So what facebook groups do we suggest?

If you are interested in renting, join both of these groups. You can either post a request like, “I’m looking to rent a two bedroom, August 15-21, at Beach Club”, or respond to DVC members that are looking to rent their points, “I have 200 points for rent, home resort Animal, $17/pt”. Respond quickly if you find a great deal, they do go quickly.

How does the process work?

After you have found points to rent, it’s fairly easy process. Here’s what I usually do.

1- Find a renter- join groups and post your request or answer an owners post.

2- Message them and talk to them about what you need. What is your home resort? How many points will I need (or look them up here). I ask them what use year they are? (This is the month their points are allocated, and if they don’t know this… then that’s a huge red flag). Ask them to look on their “portal” and check availability for your dates.

3-I put a small deposit down either with venmo or paypal in good faith

4- The owner then makes the reservation (they do this online through their own dvc account or you can three way call with DVC member services during business hours). They will need this info for the reservation:

Names of all individuals staying in the villa (including infants)

Ages (including infants)

Address( that’s matches your I.D)

Phone number

Email address

Mailing address

When they are finished, I ask for a screen shot of the reservation with the reservation confirmation number on it, and my name included on the reservation. If you are on a three way call, member service will give you the number over the phone.

I then immediately link the reservation number on the my Disney experience app (or online on disneyworld.com)

When it is confirmed on the app, I pay the remainder of the balance using either PayPal or Venmo (note Venmo is only available for US banks, so when I’ve rented from owners in Canada and UK, PayPal is the only option).

Done!

How do I know I’m not getting scammed?

It’s rare. I’ve heard of only a handful of times this has happened, and I’ve seen thousand of transactions that occur since I’ve used the groups. But you can do some due diligence to make you fell better. (these are what the moderator of the Facebook group suggest and they are great suggestions, so I’ll include their suggestion here). Owners that rent frequently will have a contract to protect both parties.

We hope this helps you feel comfortable renting that dream villa for your next trip!

Update **- here is one group we love for aulani and Disneyland rentals. Keep in mind DISNEYLAND grand Californian typically will cost more a point.
